Environmental Update January 2002

We are pleased to report that Wenita has achieved ISO 14001 certification for the management of its forest resources and operations, and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for fulfilling the requirements of a well managed forest for its Otago Coast, Berwick and Mt Allan forest areas.

We now face the challenge of retaining certification. The first FSC surveillance audit is scheduled for May this year.

NZ Falcon

New Zealand Falcon have been sighted in several of our forest blocks. One nesting site has been positively identified. The latest report is that the fledgelings have been successfully reared and have left the nest. Two other possible nesting sites are to be investigated.

EMS Activity Report

Internal Audits

Internal audits have noted a significant improvement in the levels of slash in the waterways.

Our ISO auditor has commented favourably on the contractor self audits. He is most impressed with the comments and notes being made by contractors. Keep up the good work.

Environmental Incidents

No environmental incidents were reported over the past 6 months.

Environmental Training

A new environmental management unit standard has been introduced. (Unit Standard 17772 - Demonstrate knowledge of environmental requirements in forest operations.) This unit standard is aimed at crew foremen and principal contactors. It covers environmental effects of forest operations, environmental legislation and penalties, and environmental requirements for specific forest operations.
