NIWA’s climate modelling is predicting air temperatures  are highly likely to be above average in all regions of the country until at least January.

It has confirmed the arrival of La Niña conditions and forecasts Coastal Otago will have above-normal to near-normal temperatures and below-normal rainfall. NIWA also expects soil moisture and river flows to be below normal, so it looks like it’s going to be a high-risk fire season.

Remember: All fires within 1km of the forest estate, require a permit 365 days of the year.

If you see smoke or fire call 111 immediately.
